The Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo: Our Review

Hello, 3D Printing Enthusiasts!

Welcome to the CyberPrint 3D blog! We're here to explore the exciting world of 3D printing.

We'll bring you honest reviews, practical tips, and all the insights you need to get the most out of your

prints. Today, we're taking a closer look at a printer that's been quite popular, especially if you're new to

3D printing or just want something easy to use: the Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo.

Bambu Lab has truly made significant changes in the 3D printing industry. Their ‘A1’ series aims to

bring their well-known innovation into a smaller, simpler package. But does this compact machine

truly meet expectations? Is it the ideal starting point, or are there important things to keep in mind?

Let's take a closer look.

A Quick Overview

At its core, the A1 Mini Combo isn't just a 3D printer; it's designed to be a complete, user-friendly system.

The "Combo" designation means it includes Bambu Lab's AMS Lite (that's their Automatic Material System). This makes printing with many colors or different materials

incredibly easy, right from the start.

The A1 Mini itself is a small, "bed-slinger" style printer, but don't let its size fool you. It's packed with many

clever features that Bambu Lab is known for. This printer is clearly aimed at hobbyists, students, and

anyone who wants to get into 3D printing without a major hassle. It aims to offer a smooth, "it just works"

experience—most of the time, but we'll get to that later.

The Advantages (Pros)

We've really put the A1 Mini Combo through its paces, and several aspects truly make it stand out. Here are

the main advantages:

1. Exceptionally Easy for Beginners

Honestly, this printer is one of the easiest we've ever tried for beginners. From the moment you unbox it,

the A1 Mini is designed to guide you. Features like automatic bed leveling, flow calibration, and vibration

control mean you spend less time adjusting and more time actually printing. If 3D printing seemed

complicated before, this machine offers a very accessible entry point.

2. Simple Print Startup

Once you're set up, actually getting a print going is incredibly straightforward. The touchscreen is clear,

and with the AMS Lite, changing filaments or setting up multi-color prints is no trouble at all.

It pretty much guides you through the whole process. You prepare your design, send it to the printer,

and hit print – it's that simple. No more worrying about complex settings just to get started.

3. Quick Out-of-the-Box Setup

Remember spending hours putting a 3D printer kit together? Well, those days are largely gone with the

A1 Mini. It comes almost fully assembled. You basically just attach a few parts, plug it in, and you're ready

for your first print. We're talking minutes, not hours, to get your first print going. That's a significant

benefit for anyone eager to start printing quickly.

4. Requires Minimal Ongoing Maintenance

Another big plus is how reliable this printer is. Bambu Lab built this machine to need very little help

from you. It has features like active flow compensation and a sturdy design, which means you're not

always unclogging nozzles or tightening belts. For hobbyists who just want to print, not become a

full-time technician, this low-maintenance design is a big advantage.

Things to Consider (Cons)

Even though it's great, no 3D printer is perfect. Here are a few things to think about when it comes to the

A1 Mini Combo:

1. Considerable Filament Waste

If you're doing multi-color prints with the AMS Lite, expect a good amount of filament purging.

Every time it switches colors, it has to push out a little bit of the old color to make sure the new color

is clean. This is where the technology could be better; the printer often purges more filament than it

really needs, which causes more waste. While it's necessary for good quality, this process creates a

noticeable amount of plastic waste over time, especially with complex multi-color prints. A good solution

for this is sending your purged filament to companies that recycle filament. They'll melt down your purged

filament and turn it into new filament.

2. Can Be Noisy

For those who plan to have the printer in a shared living space or an office, the fan noise can be a

significant factor. The A1 Mini's fans, especially the one that cools the print, can get quite loud while it's

running. It's not unbearable, but you'll definitely notice it. If you're used to quieter machines or need a

very quiet environment, this might be something that bothers you.

3. Print Quality Can Be a Bit Inconsistent

It's important to have fair expectations about print quality. While the A1 Mini generally makes good prints

for its price and for its target users, it might not always produce super fine details or perfect surfaces every

single time. We've noticed that sometimes, especially with very small features or certain types of filament,

the quality can be a little inconsistent compared to more expensive, highly tuned machines.

It's good quality, but it's not always top-tier. Just keep that in mind.

4. Bambu Studio's Learning Curve

Bambu Studio, which is Bambu Lab's software for getting your designs ready to print, is powerful and has

many features. However, its numerous options and terminology can be a bit overwhelming for people

who are totally new to it. Even though it's capable, the workflow might not feel natural right away if

you're coming from simpler software. It does present a bit more of a learning curve than the printer itself.

5. Time-lapse Feature Needs Improvement

As content creators, we've found the A1 Mini's built-in time-lapse features to be somewhat limited.

The printer has two modes: "smooth" and "traditional." The "smooth" mode tries to make a flowing

video by moving the print head out of the way for each picture it takes. But this adds a lot of extra time

to the print, making it not very practical for longer projects. It also requires a prime tower, which is

unnecessary for single color prints. On the other hand, the "traditional" mode takes pictures without

moving the print head, which can cause blurry spots or odd ghosting because the nozzle stays in the

shot, leaking filament and impacting the print quality. Neither option consistently gives you the clean,

high-quality, and efficient time-lapses that are important for good YouTube content, without a lot of extra

work or needing to set up another camera. Also, you have to download the time-lapse video to your

computer, and in our experience, a 30-second video can take over 10 minutes to download.

Our Final Thoughts

So, what do we really think about the Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo? If you're a beginner looking for a super

easy-to-use, feature-packed 3D printer that just works – especially if you want to do multi-color prints

– the A1 Mini Combo is an excellent choice. It's incredibly easy to set up and doesn't need much

maintenance, which are huge benefits.

However, be ready for some filament waste with multi-color prints, a noticeable fan noise, and remember

that while print quality is good, it might not always be absolutely perfect, especially in tough situations.

More experienced users who want extreme precision and love to tinker might find some of its automatic

features a bit limiting, and the print quality might not meet their very high standards.

But overall, for who it's meant for – casual users, beginners, and students – the A1 Mini Combo really

makes it much easier to get into 3D printing. It's an exciting step forward for making 3D printing

something almost anyone can do.
